    Travel with animals

Discover the world with the whole family. At SAS we welcome all travelers – four-legged and two-legged. Important information if you are traveling with animals.

Take your best friend onboard. Dogs and cats are always welcome in the cabin with SAS.

    • If you wish to bring a pet on the flight, either in the cabin or in the cargo hold, you must reserve space for it within 24 hours after you have booked your flight ticket by contacting SAS Sales and Service (please have the cage measurements at hand when calling in). You will receive a notification if we are able to accommodate your request at the latest within 24 hours.

    • You are required to complete a document before traveling with animals (except for domestic flights in Sweden, Norway and Denmark)

    • Only dogs and cats may accompany you in the cabin (except in SAS Business). Other pets/animals must travel in the cargo hold.

    • If you wish to bring a kitten or puppy, it must be at least 8 weeks old. If it is less than 14 weeks old, you need a veterinary's certificate stating it is approved for air transport.

    • Pets or animals are not permitted on charter flights with SAS.

    • Service dogs or other service animals (such as rescue dogs) always travel for free in the cabin with SAS.

    • Remember to have the correct documentation certifying your pet's health, for entering and traveling through all countries on the flight. If possible, your pet should have a microchip or a tattoo as well as a pet passport for travel within or to the EU .

    • Different countries have different conditions for bringing animals or pets into their country. For this reason you need to check this information before booking your ticket, either by asking the embassy or by their web page of the country you will be visiting.

    • If you will be continuing your trip on another airline, other rules may apply. You can find information in this regard on the respective airline’s web site.

    • For all SAS flights to or from UK, Ireland, Hong Kong or Dubai, pets and animals must be sent as cargo and cannot be transported as checked baggage or in the cabin (except for service animals). Contact Trust Forwarding for more information.

    • For all SAS flights to Iceland, an import license is required for any transport of pets or animals.

    • Contact SAS Sales and Service if you have any additional questions.

Below you find operational regulations and guidelines which SAS needs to adhere to regarding the safe transport of live animals in the cabin. Ensure that you understand and adhere to these to these regulations and guidelines if you intend to transport live animals in cabin. Contact SAS Sales and Service if you have any questions in this regard.

    • When you travel with your pet in the cabin, the cage/bag is considered as your carry-on baggage, and therefore you cannot bring any additional carry-on baggage onboard.

    • It is not permitted to bring animals in a normal bag. The cage/bag has to be suitable for flight transport of animals, such as a Sherpa bag or other type of soft-sided pet carrier available at pet stores.

    • The cage/bag must also be large enough for the animal to stand, lie down & turn naturally in. If these requirements are not fulfilled, check-in staff may reject its carriage onboard.

    • When transporting pets in the cabin, they must stay inside their cage/bag and be placed on the floor throughout the entire duration of the flight.

    • For transport in the cabin, each passenger may only bring one cage/bag.

    • One cage/bag may contain up to two cats or two dogs, as long as the cage/bag can be placed under the seat in front of you and its total weight does not exceed 8 kg/18 lbs.

    • Make sure to have the cage/bag dimensions ready when you book your ticket. That way it is easier for us to see if there is space available for the cage/bag on the flight you want.

    • Maximum dimensions for your cage/bag are 40 x 25 x 23 cm/ 16" x 9,8"x 9".

    • Maximum weight including the animal is 8 kg/18 lbs.

    • At SAS, you always pay a flat rate per cage/bag and direction (outbound or homebound, including connections).

Below you find operational regulations and guidelines which SAS needs to adhere to regarding the safe transport of live animals in the cargo hold, as either checked-in baggage or as cargo transport. Ensure that you understand and adhere to these to these regulations and guidelines if you intend to transport any live animals in the cargo hold. Contact SAS Sales and Service if you have any questions in this regard.

    • Animals that are checked in as cargo must travel in transport cages/boxes that are leak-proof, solid, tight, clean & disinfected.

    • The cage/box must be made of fiberglass, metal (not welded or wire mesh), rigid plastic, solid wood or plywood with handles on the sides & a solid floor (net floors not accepted).

    • The box must be equipped with containers for food & water & the bottom of the cage should be covered with a layer of newspaper or sawdust (not hay or straw).

    • For the animal's comfort, the cage must be large enough so that the animal can stand up, turn and lie naturally. If the cage does not fulfill these requirements, check-in staff may reject its carriage.

    • SAS only transport boxes which are approved by the veterinary authorities, which for example are available for purchase from Trust Forwarding.

    • Animals over 14 kg/31 lbs. each must travel in separate crates.

    • Two adults animals of comparable size up to 14 kg/31 lbs. each can be transported in the same cage if they are used to cohabitation.

    • Up to three animals can be transported together if they are under 6 months old and come from the same litter.

    • When animals are transported in the cargo hold, the air pressure and temperature are the same as in the passenger cabin. The availability of oxygen in the cargo hold for live animals limits the number and size of the animals that are allowed to be transported on the same flight.

    • On flights with aircraft types Airbus A319, A320 & A321 which are of over 3 hours duration, the maximum allowable weight of each animal is 30 kg/66 lbs.
